The Sheep Rescue: Offa’s Dyke, Day 8

The iffy weather of yesterday was replaced by great weather as you can tell from the great pictures. And, we got to start off with a good deed.

It is not uncommon when wandering through pasture land to see livestock that has tried to exercise their “right” to the greener grass on the other side. We were entertained early on when we watched a lamb trying to get through various holes in the fence to return home. But it ignored our entreaties to try going back through the original escape route. We were no help. We should I’ve up trying to reason with them.

But just around the corner we found another lamb that had escaped from its field and was struggling to get back in. No idea how it got out, but, in this case there was a convenient gate that Trev managed to wrench open. It took a few attempts for Kim and I to get it to go back through the gate which Trev held upon. Whereupon it went straight to the ewe we assume was its mother, and began to nurse enthusiastically. It is funny to watch lambs nurse. Usually their tails wag so hard it looks like they are trying to pump the milk out.

Our high point today on the route was a tower built to celebrate the jubilee—50th Anniversary of his reign—for King George III. Construction started in 1810 but storms and lack of money led to it being a wreck. It is still a great viewpoint frequented by hikers and their adorable dogs.
