The television series Doc Martin was part of the inspiration for this particular trip, and now we are staying in Port Isaac—that’s Portwenn for Doc Martin fans. The village is portrayed as an idyllic, Cornish port town. Frankly, it is.
Our hike today started in Portwenn Port Isaac and took us past the Doc’s surgery (now a pricey vacation rental called Fern Cottage) and through countryside to the tiny village of Port Quin. A small tower is located there called Doyden castle. It was built in the 1830s by a wealthy man to entertain his friends. It is also a pricey vacation rental referred to as a “truncated, Gothic, folly.”
In Port Quin we enjoyed a late morning break and card games at a small cafe located in a converted horse trailer. It seems the hamlet is too small to support anything larger.
After that, we started on the bulk of the path along the coast. It proved to be a grueling up and down trail along the coast with amazing views. Some of the stairs Laurie refers to as the “buns of steel” workout. Along with the views we enjoyed the wildflowers which are in full bloom right now.
