Many of the village names in Cornwall and Devon Counties were reminiscent of family names in A Game of Thrones. I can imagine a house Tintagel, Trebetherick, or Crackington competing for the Iron Throne. But in the Cotswolds, the names seem like they are more at place in a fairy tale: Painswick, Winchcombe and… Birdlip. Just as charming, but a clear indication we’ve left regions with a strong Celtic influence.
Bath
The city of Bath has a history going back to the Romans who took advantage of natural hot springs in the area to develop…baths. In English history it is noted for being the site where the first King of England was crowned and part time home to literary notables such as Jane Austen, Mary Shelley, and Charles Dickens. If you’re a fan of Bridgerton you’ll recognize locations where the show is filmed.
We day tripped to the city to explore gardens and the city itself. The city sponsors free walking tours—no tipping even. It was a great way to explore this ancient city with an insider.
Cotswolds Day 2
Our second leg of the Cotswolds Way started in the aforementioned village of Birdlip. It started out on sylvan paths and took us through fields with fuzzy, Oreo colored cows. Trev thought they were of the double-stuffed variety. The last part was near old limestone quarries with rockier paths. We were actually able to walk back through town to reach our flat without catching a bus.
